A Guide to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival & Its Traditions

A Guide to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival & Its Traditions

For nine days every October, Phuket’s streets transform with sacred rituals, white-clad devotees, crackling firecrackers, and stalls selling delicious vegetarian versions of Phuket local food. This is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, a sacred traditional celebration of faith and devotion that has been held for over 200 years.

Festival Essentials: What, When, Where & How

Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival is rooted in Chinese Taoist traditions, honoring the Nine Emperor Gods. This celebration is centered around purification, abstinence, and merit-making. During the nine days of the festival, many participants follow a strict “jay” diet, which is entirely plant-based and free from animal products, as well as pungent herbs like garlic and onion, and strong flavors believed to interfere with inner calm.

Here’s what you need to know:

When: The festival dates change every year because it follows the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival takes place during the ninth lunar month, typically falling in September or October.

When: The nine-day festival begins on the first day of the ninth lunar month. In the early 19th century, an epidemic struck in the tin mining community of Kathu. Prayers for healing to the Nine Emperor Gods were offered, along with the devotees' adherence to a nine-day vegetarian diet. The practice was adopted by the rest of the Chinese community and passed down through generations, evolving into the Phuket Vegetarian Festival we know today.

Where: The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is held throughout Phuket Town, with key events centered around major Chinese shrines across Phuket.

How: Look for yellow flags with red Chinese characters, which mark all participating stalls, shops, and restaurants.

Locations to Visit During Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Phuket Town

The heart of the festival, Phuket Town, hosts many of the central events at various shrines:

Jui Tui Shrine: A location for ceremonies like the pole-raising ritual and colorful processions.

Bang Neow Shrine: A prominent shrine known for its elaborate processions.

Lim Hu Tai Su Shrine: This shrine features intense rituals, like body-piercing.

Kathu Shrine

Kathu Shrine is one of the oldest Chinese shrines in Phuket and is considered the birthplace of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

What to See During the Phuket Vegetarian Festival

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a cultural and spiritual event, which opens with the raising of the sacred lantern pole at each shrine to invite the Nine Emperor Gods. Each morning, street processions of devotees wind through town, led by the Ma Song, spirit mediums believed to be possessed by the gods and who accept their physical burdens to absorb misfortune and bring blessings. Firecrackers are widely used to welcome the gods and mark the beginning and end of the processions.

You’ll witness body piercing rituals to display devotion, hear the sound of firecrackers, and smell the incense permeating the area. Some shrines have fire walking for purification and bladed ladder climbing, usually later in the day. The ceremonial bridge crossing is a ritual believed to ward off evil spirits. The intense atmosphere isn’t for the faint-hearted, but it’s deeply meaningful and conducted by sincere devotees.

For nine days and nights, devotees enter a period of physical and mental purity by abstaining from meat, wearing white, refraining from alcohol, and offering tributes at the shrines. At the end of the festival, a farewell ceremony and procession are performed to send the Nine Emperor Gods back to heaven.

What to Eat During Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival

During the festival, Phuket Old Town streets transform into a vegan street food destination, offering various Thai and Chinese dishes that follow strict rules of no meat, dairy, or eggs. There’s also no garlic, onions, chives, or other pungent herbs in the dishes, as they’re meant to focus on balanced and calm energy, as well as the purification of the mind and body.

You’ll find vegetarian versions of traditional Thai dishes, such as curries, noodle soups, and stir-fries, as well as snacks like crispy fried mushrooms, tofu skewers, and desserts like mango sticky rice and taro pudding. Must-try dishes include:

  • Pad krapow jay: Spicy tofu stir-fried with holy basil
  • Mee pad jay: Stir-fried yellow noodles with vegetables
  • Jay spring rolls: Golden, crunchy, deep-fried spring rolls served with sweet chili sauce
  • Green curry with tofu: Coconut-milk-based vegetable curry with mild spice

What to Know Before You Go

Want to make the most of your experience? Keep these tips in mind:

  • Wear white clothing as a sign of respect
  • Arrive by 6:30 am if you want a good spot for the morning processions
  • Bring cash along, as some food stalls may not accept cards
  • Expect loud firecrackers, so earplugs for children may be a good idea
  • Avoid physical contact with devotees in the processions, especially the Ma Song
  • This is a busy time of year, so plan your accommodation and transport early
